A New Day (Part One)

It’s a new day for parents and children of 24th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles.

Yesterday, scores of concerned parents organized a rally and bus trip to LAUSD’s downtown office, where the parents delivered 359 petitions to turnaround their children’s failing school. Signed petitions represented 440 students (or 68% of students at the school).

Adelanto School Board Approves New School

Historic Victory in Adelanto!

Last night, Desert Trails Parents Union (DTPU) and nonprofit school operator LaVerne Elementary Preparatory Academy earned approval from the Adelanto School Board to form a new school to replace the struggling Desert Trails Elementary School. The Adelanto School Board's vote concludes a nearly two year-long campaign for change by DTPU.

LaVerne Prep earned a 911 API score last year; Desert Trails' score dropped to 699.

Viola Davis Nominated for NAACP Image Award

The holidays brought good news for Tony Award-winning actress Viola Davis: she received a nomination from the NAACP Image Awards for her performance in the movie “Won’t Back Down.”

Ben Austin, executive director for Parent Revolution, issued the following statement on Viola Davis’ nomination:

Newtown

Our thoughts and prayers are with the children, parents, teachers and people of Newtown, Connecticut. Our hearts are broken.

Evidence of a New Paradigm

The year 2010 was a game-changing year for parents in the United States.

For far too long, many parents with children in failing schools across the country have been left to fend for themselves as best they can.

That began to change for a few California communities in 2010.

Kudos

Earlier today, two leaders from both sides of the political fence gave specific ‘shout-outs’ to Parent Revolution for our ongoing efforts organizing parents across the country to transform failing schools through a ‘kids-first’ agenda.

Former Governor Jeb Bush, a Republican, and John Podesta, former Clinton White House Chief-of-Staff and a Democrat, praised the work of Parent Revolution during their remarks at the ‘Excellence in Action’ National Summit on Education Reform, which is taking place in Washington, D.C.

Not-for-Profit Charter Schools vs. For Profit Charter Schools

Ever since Parent Revolution expressed its concern about a proposed Michigan “Parent Trigger” bill allowing for-profit charter schools to participate, we have received a massive amount of criticism from conservatives within the education reform community.

A Great Night for Kids and Parents (Part Two)

We are proud to celebrate the election of Teresa Rogers, a member of the trailblazing Desert Trails Parent Union, to the Adelanto School Board!

Tuesday’s vote was a referendum on leadership by the Adelanto School Board. Voters weighed in a big way about where they want the district to go.

For the past two years, Adelanto parents fought tooth and nail to reform their schools, facing obstacle after obstacle placed in their way by individuals who were more interested in defending the status quo than improving the education of Adelanto kids.

A Great Night for Kids and Parents (Part One)

The future for kids in California is a bit brighter today following Tuesday's election.

We applaud the broad support for public education demonstrated in the vote for Prop 30. Voters throughout California recognized that tough times require tough measures, and voted to protect funding for our schools.

Passing Prop 30 was a necessary step toward enacting a kids-first agenda in California. Because of this vote, we can now move forward with confidence that there won’t be upwards of $6 billion in draconian cuts to our schools and public safety.

Vote for Calif. Prop. 30 on November 6

“Parent Revolution is announcing its support for Proposition 30 which is on the California ballot on November 6.

“Parent Revolution stands for the simple notion that we must make every single decision in public education based on the best interests of children, not adults. This vision is only possible if parents are empowered to hold the system accountable to the interests of children. Passing Prop. 30 to prevent further draconian cuts to our schools is a vital component of a kids-first agenda right now in California.
